Flat feet are common, and many people have them without any trouble. But when fallen arches cause pain, fatigue, or knock-on problems up the leg, treatment makes a real difference. Rocky Mountain Foot & Ankle evaluates and treats flat feet in both adults and children.
What are flat feet?
Flat feet (fallen arches) occur when the arch of the foot is low or collapses so that most or all of the sole contacts the ground. Some people are born with flat feet; others develop them over time, often from weakening of the tendon that supports the arch (a condition called adult-acquired flatfoot).
Symptoms
Many flat feet are painless. When symptoms occur, they include arch or heel pain, tired or achy feet after activity, swelling along the inside of the ankle, and sometimes knee, hip, or lower-back discomfort from altered alignment.
Treatment options
Custom orthotics are the cornerstone of treatment. They support the arch, improve alignment, and relieve strain. We may also recommend supportive footwear, targeted stretching and strengthening, and anti-inflammatory care. For progressive or severe cases, particularly adult-acquired flatfoot, surgical reconstruction can restore the arch and stabilize the foot.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do flat feet always need treatment?
No. If your flat feet don’t cause pain or problems, no treatment is needed. We focus on flat feet that produce symptoms or are getting worse over time.
Can flat feet cause knee or back pain?
Yes. Fallen arches change how your whole leg aligns and absorbs impact, which can contribute to knee, hip, and lower-back pain. Correcting the foot often helps.
