A bunion is one of the most common and most treatable foot deformities we see. If a bony bump has formed at the base of your big toe and shoes have become painful to wear, you don’t have to live with it. The board-certified podiatrists at Rocky Mountain Foot & Ankle treat bunions at every stage, from early conservative care to advanced Lapiplasty 3D surgical correction.
What is a bunion?
A bunion (hallux valgus) is a bony bump that forms on the joint at the base of the big toe. It develops gradually as the big toe drifts toward the smaller toes, pushing the joint outward. Over time the bump enlarges, the joint stiffens, and everyday footwear starts to rub and ache.
Bunions are progressive, meaning they tend to worsen without treatment. The good news is that early intervention can slow that progression and relieve pain. When surgery is needed, modern techniques correct the problem at its root.
Symptoms of a bunion
Common signs include a visible bump on the outside of the big toe joint, swelling, redness or soreness around the joint, restricted big-toe movement, and persistent pain that worsens in tight shoes. Many patients also develop corns or calluses where the first and second toes overlap.
What causes bunions?
Bunions are largely the result of inherited foot mechanics: the way your foot is structured and how it bears weight. Tight, narrow, or high-heeled shoes don’t directly cause bunions, but they can speed up their formation and make symptoms worse. Arthritis and prior foot injuries can also contribute.
Non-surgical bunion treatment
Most patients begin with conservative care. We may recommend wider, lower-heeled footwear, protective bunion padding, custom orthotics to correct the underlying mechanics, ice and anti-inflammatory measures for flare-ups, and cortisone injections to calm an irritated joint. These steps won’t reverse the deformity, but they often provide meaningful, lasting relief.
Bunion surgery & Lapiplasty 3D correction
When pain limits your daily life and conservative care is no longer enough, surgery can realign the joint and eliminate the bump. Our surgeons have advanced training in Lapiplasty 3D Bunion Correction, a technique that addresses the deformity in all three dimensions and stabilizes the root of the problem. This can mean a lower chance of recurrence and earlier weight-bearing than traditional procedures. We’ll walk you through every option and recommend the approach best suited to your foot and your goals.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will a bunion go away on its own?
No. Bunions are structural and progressive; they don’t resolve without treatment. Conservative care can relieve pain and slow progression, but only surgery can correct the deformity itself.
Is bunion surgery worth it?
For patients with persistent pain that limits daily activity, modern bunion surgery is highly effective at relieving pain and restoring function. We only recommend surgery once conservative options have been considered.
How long is recovery after bunion surgery?
Recovery varies by procedure. Lapiplasty often allows earlier weight-bearing than traditional surgery, with many patients returning to comfortable shoes within several weeks. We’ll give you a personalized timeline at your consultation.
Can bunions come back after surgery?
Recurrence is possible with any technique, but 3D correction methods like Lapiplasty are designed to stabilize the root of the deformity and reduce that risk.
